Weekly Breakfast Special: French Toast Trio
April 11, 2026
August 8 is International Cat Day, and at Café Rico in Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica, we’re taking this opportunity to celebrate our feline companions and reaffirm our commitment to animal welfare in our community.
Over the years, Café Rico has become a haven not just for coffee lovers and book enthusiasts but also for local cats. Our open-air garden café provides a safe and welcoming environment where cats can relax and interact with our guests.
We’re proud to support Los Gatitos de Marlies, a local non-profit organization dedicated to rescuing and caring for stray, orphaned, and injured cats in the Puerto Viejo area. Founded by Marlies de Louw, the organization provides medical care, fosters cats until they find forever homes, and assists local families who can’t afford veterinary services.
“Marlies saw a need and couldn’t say no and so started a cat rescue… She has fostered many street cats, gotten them spayed/neutered, gotten them veterinary care and provided all the care needed until they can find a forever home.” — Puerto Viejo Satellite
Your support helps cover vet bills, food, and other essential expenses. Donations can be made directly through PayPal.
This International Cat Day, we invite you to join us in supporting the well-being of Puerto Viejo’s cats. Whether by donating to Los Gatitos de Marlies, adopting a rescue cat, or simply spreading the word, every action counts.
Let’s work together to ensure that every cat in our community is safe, healthy, and loved.
Visit Café Rico to celebrate cats, sip some damn good coffee, and experience us for yourself.
